The art is cool but the characters are bland and unlikable and the whole show has a pedophilic overtone. I used to be hugely into anime, because I adore good art and animation, but there's not much out there that doesn't make me gag with how obviously it leans into pedo and fetish territory. Plus most of it is cringey and over-the-top just to pander to weebs. I tried to watch the recent Cyberpunk anime and just couldn't with how porny/pedo it was about the female characters. Some movies and shows that aren't gross, are anything by Studio Ghibli, Maromu Hosada, and Satoshi Kon. "Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!" was a great and wholesome show about 3 girls in an animation club, I loved that one. The only very recent "anime" I've liked at all is the Dungeon Meshi comic (created by a woman), and I'm really sad that Trigger got the animation rights to that one because they're probably just going to turn it into a fanservicey softcore porn.I know a lot of members here will probably say that anime/cartoons are meant for children, but I will always love them anyway. It's good to keep your inner child alive, especially since "adult animation" is almost always way too violent and crass for me to enjoy.
You’re welcome! NANA is a very feminist manga/anime series about prioritizing female friendship. While one of the main female characters starts off a bit pickmeisha, she becomes the stronger character (mentally wise) as the story progresses. Sooooo good!!!!
It is rape apologetics because the entire show builds up the premise that the viewer will see rape as a rational outcome given his circumstances. This show is revered by fans and people enjoy this character anyway. This would not be the case if rape of women was actually viewed as very transgressive instead of something already aligned with the sexist default. I don’t think explaining that it’s based on Freud helps this at all.
Transgressive would be something that violates their set of morals, something they would not enjoy or rationalize. The audience of anime is pandered to with fan service objectifying women and girls and depicting SA, and contains tropes like nerdy males with “harems” of attractive women, and men accidentally touching or falling on women. I have only seen a summary of Belladonna but it seems to have tons of that content, even rape revenge movies don‘t escape male gaze and rape culture.
Also, most manga and anime (whether girl anime, boy/young men, young lady) sexualize most characters. I mean, Sailor Moon (one of the most feminist and LGBT friendly shows ever) was hypersexualized on all ends!
I like some anime and I am ok with women watching it, but I’d never date a guy who watches anime. Too many issues that come with dudes who watch anime. They usually play video games and watch porn, too, and are just creepy af. Major red flag.
Love the original show and the manga, particularly for the giant robots and psychological aspects. I gotta say I hate Asuka, or how the show deals with her at least - she takes her top off with an adult man as a 14 yo girl, and also Shinjis SA scene. These scenes are so uncomfortable and unneccessary. Asuka also behaves very cringe for most of the franchise - yet is the most popular character among men. The only female character I like is Misato because she is not portrayed in such a creepy or sexualised way.
I enjoyed it as a subversion of the giant robot genre. It doesn't hold up perfectly, but its influence on the genre is indisputable. If you’re looking for something similar without quite as much sexualization, I recommend Rahxephon.
Did you like it? I thought the story was really good but didn't enjoy the gameplay that much.

I enjoyed it quite a bit. It was obvious that it was essentially unfinished, cause the second disk was really only boss battles with exposition dumps between. But I enjoyed the battle system where you punched in combos with the face buttons. It was different for me compared to just selecting actions from menus.
I liked it when it was popular. But now I don’t like it. Why? I always hated how much the studio (Gainax) pushed for Rei Ayanami. I always hated that character!
Freaking love it, but didnt watch it completely until it hit Netflix. After a binge watch, I realized that Misato is a major protagonist, bigger than Asuka, who gets very little impact for the hype she gets. Also enjoyed the last three movies and the final resolution, which is Shinji deals with his daddy issues, leaves the robots behind and moves the fuck on with his life (and the rest of the characters are also relased from the weird timeloop deal and also move on.) I guess the biggest message from the last movie and its director was that it was time to move on. Shinji dealt with his shit and closed the book, and so should the fans. Very good message for a frachise that dragged on for 20 years. Ending song also a banger.
The opening is 10000000000000000x better. I used to be fluent in Japanese. I’m relearning Japanese, since a bunch of reboots are coming out (and I take off my glasses so I don’t watch the subtitles) .And if Cruel Angel Thesis comes out… I’LL START SINGING THAT SH*T FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART!!!!!

Sorry if this is a spoiler, dislike sexualization but also that that it is a sympathetic depiction of the main character who is a sexual assaulter
