The world is so fucked up. This shows The Patriarchal System perfectly. She chose to use another woman's body to get a baby because she felt she had no choice. The system did not allow her to be both a mother and an actress. Surrogacy is horrible but I can also understand her. It's what Patriarchy do. Force women to oppress other women because they feel they have no other options.
Sadly when I was briefly taught about the concept of surrogacy in school (catholic-private), they emphasised it as a good thing (I guess because we need more of God’s children). The told me surrogates enjoy being pregnant and are willing to help especially for those (like Chung) who cannot, or are unwilling, to be pregnant. I thought it was great because I have so many anxieties about pregnancy (physical changes and how it will affect my career). It wasn’t until AFTER school and reading FDS that I realised what a complete brainwash that was and how surrogacy is actually so problematic and exploitative. Women are risking their lives to be used/rented out merely for their uteruses, it’s hard to believe they are well and truly WILLING to do this as a “job”. Chung’s actions resonate with me a lot because I used to think similarly, especially as an asian in Western culture and also as an asian woman in a career where you must work much harder than others.
