Hi all! This is the first year I've decided to spend Christmas without visiting my mom or dads side for the holidays. For context, last year when I went to my moms she refused to help me prepare the lunch and left it all to me, invited friends over which I've never met and ended up overstaying their welcome for days after. I'm not speaking to my dad as of this year, he's put me and my sister through enough emotional trauma growing up and doesn't make an effort to have a relationship with me. Most of my girlfriends live in another state and have their own plans with partners.
Going away isn't an option as most places aren't pet friendly and $600 a night.
Has anyone decided to say fuck it and spend Christmas in peace/alone? What did you do?
Looking for ideas/recommendations.
Thank you 🙏🏼
I have kids, but before kids I think I only had two christmases alone. At the time I was sad, but now I look back on that time with envy. No one to guilt you into cooking or cleaning, no family drama to make you cry, no kids requiring you to work extra hard to make “Christmas magic” happen, no man trying to guilt you into getting him expensive gifts while he gets you nothing… or socks. You can watch you fave seasonal movies, drink all the hot chocolate with the little marshmallows you want, and enjoy some peace and quiet.
Ideas:
• Make a movie marathon watch list
(If you drink you could match a cocktail to each movie)
• Get an advent calendar (there are adult ones with chocolate, tea, beer, toys…)
• Go skating
• Go to Christmas markets and craft fairs (I’m obsessed with German christmas markets)
• Make yourself a really nice dinner with lots of leftovers to enjoy or order your favourite takeout and spoil yourself
• Go for a drive somewhere beautiful
• Go for a drive at night to look at Christmas lights
• Gift yourself a new stack of books and enjoy reading them in peace
Hope you have a great one!
The first year of my divorce the kids spent xmas morning with me then went off with their Dad... it was the most relaxing Xmas day I've ever had... I lit the fire, curled up on the sofa with books/films/snacks and the dog. Later I went to a friend's house for a drink who lives up the road, but all I could think was, I want to get back on the sofa... so I made my excuses and went back home, and it was bliss ...
Holidays alone are the best! You're gonna love it. Check to see what events are happening on xmas day where you live. Sometimes a local ballet company will have a Nutcracker performance on xmas day or a choir will have a holiday concert. I also recommend checking all the super fancy expensive hotels around to see if their lounges are open and treat yourself to a drink in their bar/lobby that is decorated for the holidays. You could possibly meet a single HVM who's in town for the holidays. 🙂
