So basically I made a post on a sub Reddit explaining why a character from one of my favourite shows has pick me tendencies (basically because she puts down other women out of jealously, dates guys who are disrespectful and dresses up as a trad wife to impress her bf etc). The entire sub ripped me apart accusing me of making things up, saying she's not seeking male validation, that jealousy is normal etc and basically treating me like I have no intelligence. One said they hate the term Pick me and it's one of the worst terms made by gen z.
I thought then where did the term come from because it seems older than gen z. I did a quick Google but found many articles saying the term Pick me is rooted in misogyny and reversing feminism. That it's a way for women to insult other women.
I ended up deleting the thread because no one was reading anything I posted and the responses are hell bent on insulting me rather than respectful. Now I'm curious though, why is the term so hated ? Since women are conditioned to dream of marriage and get male validation from the patriarchy, it is very easy to be a pick me/cool girl.
Here’s my take: men these days want to be chased and treated like a princess. The term “pickme” indirectly validates that, because a pickme is a woman who bends over backwards for men.
Men want to defend what’s in their best interest so they attempt squash that term— they don’t want women to be enlightened.
Reddit hates women, don't seek any validation on that platform.
Men looooove pick me's because they benefit from them, ergo, they'll defend them and attack you for trying to change the status quo
I could be wrong, but I think the term Pick Me comes from Grey’s Anatiny. The scene comes up if you search “Pick Me Grey’s Anatomy” on YouTube. It’s very uncomfortable to watch and the actress who played Meredith Grey hated it.
There’s a negative connotation because it carries an implication that a woman is making a fool of herself out of desperation to try and gain favor from men. It’s an insult. A lot of women with Pick Me tendencies are especially touchy about it because they want to believe that their unhealthy obsession with male validation is totally normal. That's why people on Reddit go crazy if you mention the word.
Yes they're trying to make it seem like FDS is hateful like the incel movement when our focus is trying to protect ourselves and level up not waste our time "hating men".
I thought the term pick me came from the FDS community.
