There was a time in my life when I loved magazines and articles, but over the years I feel like the quality I'm finding leaves a lot to be desired.
Lately I've been craving to read interesting thought pieces, social commentary, and the like.
Do you have any recommendations? How do you feel about The New Yorker (was recommended to me once but I haven't browsed it)?
I appreciate your insights!
I've learned a lot of fascinating cultural tidbits from the New Yorker, and some of their short stories, poetry and cartoons are wonderful. However, I definitely find it very, very American-centric, and I need to search for the world affairs sections to interest me sometimes. Even then, I read with a critical eye because western writers often fail to grasp the nuances of global politics, IMO.
I really relate to your request, OP. I am trying to become better read myself, and it's taken me to places I never expected. Full disclaimer, in my list below I've included some sites that lean towards conservative cultural commentary and political analyses - though these sites didn't change my views, they definitely broadened my perspective on the world.
I've had luck with:
Aeon
Guernica
Cabinet
Le Monde Diplomatique
The American Spectator
Village Voice
Foreign Policy
1843 by The Economist
I also recommend checking out Arts and Letters Daily, which has a very fascinating collection of constantly-updating essays, articles and letters from multiple sources. I got many of my above recommendations from their sidebar, and you will find many other magazines, newspapers and journals there.
This one was a killer response to a common issue, women always seem to get shafted and lowballed by companies with regards to salaries...[edited] ...frankly, it's disgusting what this company did.

I would personally recommend The Atavist Magazine, Longreads, and I like The New Yorker specifically for this article detailing everything I find gross about "True Detective" (I like to read analyses about a lot of different media so that's why it was of interest for me). I also read a really good short story called "Cut" by Catherine Lacey, on The New Yorker as well, I feel like it was actually recommended on this forum before but I'm not sure.
