My wonderful PI gave me and my lab partner a book and a lovely card for the holidays. My lab partner suggested we get her a gift card, but I think it far too informal tbh. A gift card would be best to give to friends but not her. She's been dedicated to her field for 40+ years and I feel like she deserves something tangible and thoughtful. My mom suggested a nice bottle of wine, but I have a feeling that she doesn't drink as often. I thought of flowers and a nice box of chocolate with a card, but now I'm at a lost. Any ideas? She's in her late 70's too.

I agree with you, gift cards are impersonal. I think a thank you note would be lovely along with something to make her office life more enjoyable. Snacks, a warm blanket or scarf if it tends to be cold, a cute plant to brighten up a window. Chocolates are a pretty safe bet. If you want to go big, a gift basket with office friendly snacks can be super thoughtful. I also came across science art which I dig, and it seems like this the right place to share it: https://www.etsy.com/shop/sandraculliton
What about a bottle of fancy olive oil or balsamic (ORO, vom foss)? A low maintenance plant in a cute pot (succulent or cactus, poinsettia if they have no pets)? If they have pets maybe a pet toy would be endearing? I had a PI who was always writing notes - moleskine journal.
Have you heard of GilsHoneyBess on Etsy? They have so many beautiful gift sets ($30+). I purchase from them all the time.
