I am ”fascinated“ by the way how america’s politicians devise population in voting hostages. By keeping the loans not forgiven but on pause or women’s rights on their mercy not codified in law it’s stop any meaningful progress because people instead of voting any policies had to stick to the fundamentals. Can’t loose the right to abortion so must vote for democrats rather than republicans but the foreign policy isn’t very different. The dems seems to think that being an alternative to reps is enough to win, and they do. Reps are keeping up with satisfying their base because it’s very sustainable for them - low taxes, public money used in private schools, big buged for police. your country that is an example of prosperity and democracy for world use this cheap trick as ex soviet banana republics.
I was always suspicious how during obama times you didn’t have significant reforms while he had majority in both senate and congress. He had à nerve to blame reps for not having free healthcare or something in podcast later.
also for me was suspicious when trump got a majority that he would not ban abortion. In a book about your politics i read that abortion is key to keep some votes they vote for a party solely on this principle and by puting a final solution: full ban or full access they loose a base. So for reps to always promise and for dems always scare that you’re gonna lose it. I was wondering how would be solved and “i wasn’t disappointed “ . Respectfully, your perspective is from the outside. Obama did have significant reforms: Affordable Care Act, the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, Dodd-Frank Wall Street reform, saving American auto manufacturing and ending the Iraq War are some of the biggest and they had a major impact on my life and the lives of many people I know. Aside from the material reforms I described which changed opportunities and quality of life for working class Americans, there is a palpable difference in American culture pre and post Obama, especially when you look at people who are left leaning, but in general, social reform has even spilled onto the right. Before Obama, people of every political stripe used slurs without a shred of self consciousness.
To provide context you lack, the abortion fight has been fought on a state level. Roe v Wade was the law federally and Trump could not snap his fingers to override the Supreme Court or force them to change it. We have difference branches of government for this reason. We can’t force something that is ruled unconstitutional. Republicans have been campaigning on this issue, filing lawsuits for years, and successfully outlawed abortion recently in many states since Roe v Wade was recently overturned by the courts (the president doesn’t decide this and neither does the house or senate). We have seen states enact bounty hunter laws to reward people for turning in women suspected of abortion. Women have gone to jail. Women have been turned away at hospitals. You were misinformed about this. Meanwhile, Republican campaign ads try to make uninformed people think it’s a non issue.
Many reforms have been blocked by the different branches, including and especially the Supreme Court which leans strongly conservative.
We have free and partial covered tuitions (all from taxes ofc) but it’s not interest loan with crazy percent but fixed sum of money.
Democrats have held the house, senate and presidency for over a year now. Loan forgiveness is the carrot they dangle for votes. What's going to meaningfully change when they have the house, Senate and presidency for another year or two? And when they do forgive loans, it's not free money-the taxpayers fund that, so they just print more money and soon your groceries, gas and housing expenses will go up another couple hundred per month due to inflation. It's not the free gift you think it is.
