I love the FDNY and have supported them since I served as a voluteer at Ground Zero after the World Trade Center attacks, 21 years ago. That is a story, in itself, but today is about Laura Kavanaugh, the first female fire commissioner of the FDNY, the nation's largest fire department. 'Bout time, boys! Now you'll be calling your superior "Ma'am". (Or, just, "Your Majesty.")
Congrats, Queen Laura!
Im a paramedic x 20 years, its still a boys club but its getting better very sloooooowly. For a woman to head a predominately male field like this is awesome. The old adage that women have to work twice as hard to get half the respect is true in EMS still. I will never forget the Lieutenant i was training with 20 years ago in school who flat out told me women are not cut out for EMS, that we dont have the temperament and decision making skills. Yea dude. I trained other medics for 10 years on a truck and if I caught even a WHIFF of misogyny they were off my truck. Hopefully I changed a few mens minds in my career that women are perfect for EMS because we excel at multi tasking and empathy.
time for other institutions to follow suit!
Yay!!!!!
