I work as a hairdresser renting a chair in a salon. I've been there a few years now. It's the best pick of a bad bunch in town.
I have a lot of my own customers that follow me from place to place over the years but some higher profile ones only because I'm at that salon. I care about this sort of thing in terms of career development.
Recently things have got really out of hand with another hairdresser being horrible and catty and its really dragging me down. It's proper serious shit but also typical of this kind of place. I want to leave. But I'm worried about losing the stream of high profile customers.
Originally I asked to move to another salon in the chain and the owner said no, but now they're saying yes once a chair comes up. But it's gotten to the point where the relationships too strained for me to try and negotiate sending the higher profile clients over to me there. So I'll basically be paying (more, btw) for something I don't need help with at all.
I've also considered trying to stay it out, I've done it before somewhere else. On paper, this is definitely the best option. She definitely isn't here for the long hall. But emotionally, idk. I need to be a lot more on the ball to do this, else I ruminate and fixate. If I could pull it off, it'd be amazing. But I don't know if I can.
What are your thoughts on this? Anyone been through anything similar? It strikes me as feeling similar to being trapped in a LV relationship. How much is sunk cost fallacy playing a role etc etc
From my experience with hair dressers, your clients will follow you wherever you go. With that in mind, you've got a lot more freedom to move around than you think. Pick a different salon or maybe use your home. There are tons of options that don't involve daily abuse.
