I feel these days that it's so common for everyone to have at least one tattoo, small or big.
I don't have any; I feel most of them look ugly. The only time I'm fine with tattoos is in fiction works, for some reason.
I associate tattoos with prison culture and gang activities.
What are your thoughts on men with tattoos?
Just my personal opinion:
To me, it screams LV and bad with money.
So many of these tattoos cost hundreds to even thousands of dollars. That's what you choose to spend your money on?
And I no longer believe in the "bad boy on the outside, big softie on the inside" trope.
Men who try to present themselves as tough are usually massively insecure misogynists who will abuse women in a heartbeat.
No!
I want a clean cut man. If he has a tattoo or two from his teens or early adulthood that he can now laugh about as a stupid decision, that I can deal with. But a grown man who is still into that is not for me.
Men with tattoos are addicted to them. They will always be obsessed with the next one, and spend way too much money on getting them, to the detriment of all else.
Yuck. My thoughts are yuck. Of course, most men - whether they have tattoos or not - are low value, but in my experience, the tatooed ones are, without exception, low or negative value.
I'm heavily tattooed myself (historical designs, nothing remotely related to either gang or prison culture, haha - plus no face, neck, chest, or anything tacky like that, though I do have hands done) and given that the vast majority of male ink out there is boring, generic, and shit, I have zero interest in guys with tattoos.
Double standards? Maybe. Do I care? Nope.
I'd be careful to judge that especially women since many are covering up surgery and other self harm scars you don't know about. And our sh*t society doesn't accept people with self harm scars caused by depression and other mental health issues. I was bullied most of my life for these scars and taken advantageof left and right (cruel world we live in) so decided to cover them with beautiful floral work to paint something positive over something very dark, otherwise every day I had a physical reminder of my pain (the scars) I have tattoos covering both my arms and legs due to self harm scars from going through severe depression caused by both parents abandoning me as a child and abuse in my teens. It depends on the individual but with men usually they're not the greatest from what I've seen. Tatoos are an investment and I made sure to go to one of the best artists in the country in Miami. The two I got locally in the smaller city I live in turned out looking like sh*t and I has to go to Miami to get reworked by a professional artist. If I didn't have self harm scars covering my entire body I most likely wouldn't have gotten any tatoos.
I feel you on this, and I was actually debating writing a post on it. No one in my immediate family has tattoos (honestly, I don't think any of my cousins do either) and my parents and grandparents have a more traditional outlook like you--tattoos are low class, and have to do with criminals or sailors....
However, I'm currently in a field that's male dominated and tattoos are sooo popular with them, and also with the few women that work here. I'm kind of the odd one out with no tattos tbh. I have kind of mixed feelings about it, and a guy I see frequently who is otherwise pretty cute has a LOT of tats. Like full sleeve, on his legs, chest, etc. I have a tiny crush I've been trying to stamp out, and one of the things I've been thinking about is how all the tats are probably a red flag lmao.
Is it a way of (emotionally) coping for some people? I had a female friend who had a rough childhood and she was always getting extensive work done, and she made a half-joke about it being cope. Wasn't sure how seriously to take that.
I hope this doesn't come across as rude to to ladies with tats, it's just a very alien thing to me and not a part of the family and culture I grew up in so I'd like to understand better. Especially when it comes to men and if I should have double standards for tatted men versus tatted women like a commenter mentioned 😬
Hobbies related tattos are very childish imo. I like a lot of things and don't need to put them on my skin forever or make it a statement as if it was my whole personality... specially if a man has one about a videogame I'm fucking runnin away nobody can stop me.
If it's something like a little paw in honor to his late dog or something with meaning it's cute. Though if has a bunch of them, meaning or not, it screams a weak mind and craving for attention.
I love tattoos as an art form and like them on men IF they’re done well and are tasteful. Bonus if every single one of them isn’t a form of self-worship. However, since I rarely see this, I prefer that men don't have them at all.
I ask about mens’ tattoos early on because I really don’t want to look at an anime character when I am naked with someone and need to consider whether or not I can get over that. I hate to be judgmental, but I can’t help that certain tattoos would be a massive turn-off. Scars, stretch marks, and other imperfections are no big deal, but if someone chose to have Sonic the Hedgehog permanently inked on their chest, that’s going to be a bigger challenge.
I wonder why they would do this as well. As an artist myself, as much as I appreciate the visual arts, I have the self awareness to know how much my personal taste as well as trends can evolve over time... If I like an artwork I can get a print and look at it on my wall everyday. If I want to remember someone or something, photos are extremely acessible or i could just, you know, remember it in my mind. Maybe they dont evolve as people. Maybe they dont see their clean healthy skin as good/cool enough? Maybe they want to project a tough guy rebel image. maybe they think their basic ass ideas are profound enough to ink into their skin.
I think permanent decisions should be avoided as much as possible because as I said, so much can change and hopefully you arent the same person in 10 years from when you made that decision. I guess nowadays theres lazer removal but then it becomes a major waste of money and time.
Same here! When you look at me and see I play roller derby one usually assumes I have tattoos everywhere but I don't. I just took out my tongue ring that's about all I had. It wasn't until my last ZVM that I don't like tattoos on people as much anymore and he didn't have any and liked that I didn't either.
It's funny because I always wanted tattoos so bad but could never afford them and now I'm glad I don't have any because everyone else does! Lol
ETA: I live in miami as well.
Tattoos became so mainstream everyone and their mothers seem to have one. This is a very recent trend.
My feelings about tattoos are mixed as some men can be really sexy with it while others remind me of the walls of a public toilet. Sorry!
It’s like having bangs, not everyone can pull it off.
I don’t know why people put ink on a body they neglect. I understand celebrating your skin but I do feel like many people use tattoos as replacement for actual therapy. And it shows.
So yeah, can be sexy but more often than not it is done on people with problems.
Depends.
Personally, I try not to date men with visible tattoos or tattoos in general. I don't have any due to commitment issues and that it's something too permanent even with laser removal.
That being said, with some tattoos if done, and positioned correctly look really good on the person. Do I think tattoos additionally elevate a person? No, but I don’t publicly shit talk people who have them.
I have more respect for people who have purpose behind the story of their ink, and not that they got it because it looks cool.
I don't have any tattoos and I prefer men with no tattoos. I broke up with my college boyfriend because he got a hideously large tattoo on his back knowing how much I hated them.
I don't see tats as gang culture mostly bc my conservative family has tats but all easily coverable. I do associate face, neck, and hand tats with poor decision making tho. I look more at whether the tats are of good quality or not. A shitty tat is gross. A beautiful, high quality one is nice.
I'm also untatted but not becuase I relate them to bad things. I choose to put my money elsewhere. I'd really love a dragon down my back, a medusa on my shoulder, an octopus down one leg and a jellyfish down another but it'd cost thousands and I'd rather spend my money on other things. Overall, I think men with tasteful, well done tats are sexy af.
I love tattoos, personally. I never wanted any, until I got one, and then I thought "wow this is pretty cool" and started growing my collection. I think tattoos tell you a lot about a person, so it would definitely depend on what kinds of tattoos he has. Tasteless tattoos of naked women or things of that nature? Nah. Same goes for neck and face tats. But tattoos in general are definitely not a turnoff for me. If anything, they are a good conversation starter, and I use my own tattoos as a vetting tool with men. A man who has been on multiple dates with me and not once asked me about any of my tattoos or what they mean to me is a red flag, for example. I also am an artsy-type person and I think tattoo art is a really neat and special craft.
I've lived in the U.S. for the past 30-plus years. This is what I've noticed:
Tattooed men are, without exception, LV and/or low-class.
Tattooed women, without exception, have a tendency to choose LV men.
No way!!!! They're ghetto and ugly regardless of design or reasoning. I have yet to see a male that looks attractive with tattoos
They have got to be high quality and good taste.
They are very accepted in my country.
Shoutout to the 305! I used to live there for over four years in NMB and Kendall. Miami does have some incredible tatoo artists however. People come from all over the world to get tatted there.
I love tattoos and I think your perspective is narrow minded. You don't have to like tattoos but associating them with criminals is wrong.
